Their interest in bringing the Serbian back to Stamford Bridge, who they sold as a footnote in the deal to sign David Luiz, is common knowledge but Benfica are typically desiring to sting the Blues for every single penny they can.
This is believed to have put off Chelsea, and reports have now suggested that Matic wants talks over his future.
Matic is said to be 'impressed' by Chelsea's interest and attracted by the prospect of working under Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea are a club he knows well from his time as a youngster and would have little problem re-adapting, and will be motivated by the feeling he has unfinished business at the club.
He told Serbian newspaper Sportski: "I was impressed to know of interest. (It) would be a way to prove that I can still play in the Premier League."
His comments have also been reported by Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, who ascertain that Matic is now hoping Benfica can be persuaded to sell him.
From assuming this deal was dead, there may just be life in it yet and Matic may just end up heading to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Benfica's €30 million asking price was thought to have put Chelsea off, and the Blues will look to bring that down. If negotiations can be agreed between the clubs - which could be more likely given the player's willingness to moved - don't be surprised if Matic ends up getting a chance to test himself in the Premier League at last.
