While in charge at Everton David Moyes was always keen on Neven Subotic; should he make the move again?
David Moyes is surely finding it hard to contain himself now he is the Manchester United manager. It must be like being a kid given a fruit pastille every now and again, as a treat, inheriting the ownership of the world’s greatest candy shop.
Now Moyes has the opportunity to stuff his face with all the gorgeously calorific sweet things he never had the chance to whilst in charge at Everton; now he can even reach the top shelf for the most premium snacks to gorge on.
With that in mind you wonder if he might consider some of his previous targets at Everton as options for United.
Joao Moutinho was linked before he signed for AS Monaco for what in confectionery terms would have been Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Russian youngster Denis Cheryshev has also been mentioned while recent reports even suggest a possible link with Sevilla danger-man Alvaro Negredo.
But what about a Borussia Dortmund player he chased for multiple transfer windows starting in 2009.
American raised Serbian international Neven Subotic was just 20-years-old when Everton first made a bid for his services in the summer of 2009 but Dortmund rejected as they themselves had only recently plucked him away from Mainz 05.
The next time Everton came calling Subotic wanted to remain at Dortmund as he was excited with the clubs project; which turned out to be pretty decent foresight.
Nowadays he is one of the pillars of the Dortmund defence that went all the way to the Champions League final this season; where he demonstrated his ability with one of the most outstanding goal-line clearances I have ever seen:
Subotic is ranked as one of Europe’s best defenders so could Moyes try bring him to Old Trafford?
He only signed a new contract at the Westfalen in January which keeps him at the club until 2016 but Mario Gotze had signed a new deal just a fortnight before; he has just joined Bayern Munich.
So a deal could be on; but would United need him?
I argue yes.
Nemanja Vidic is no longer reliable with his fitness and Rio Ferdinand is no spring chicken. While we all have hope for Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones there needs to be an extra in that equation.
You could offer a decent sum of money and Vidic as a softener to Dortmund and test the water; getting a 24-year-old Serbian upgrade in the process.
Do you think Moyes should pursue his previous interest in Subotic?
