Newcastle set to sign Olivier Kemen - reports

Reports suggest that Alan Pardew is about to add to his growing collection of Frenchmen.

Reports from France earlier today suggest that Newcastle United have reached an agreement to sign Olivier Kemen from French club Metz.

Yes…Alan Pardew is on the verge of signing yet another Frenchman!

But this one is somewhat of a mystery. Because at just 16, all we really know about Kemen is that he seems to be quite good.

The attacking midfielder-cum-forward will sign subject to a medical and the reports in his homeland suggest he is, or at least was, “the great hope” of Metz.

With compensation yet to be agreed, the suggestion is it could be anything from €400,000 to €1million, although those figures are unconfirmed.

Kemen was part of the French squad that competed at this year’s UEFA Under-17 Championship, making his debut in the opening game – a 3-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

But with no goals and no assists in his three appearances, it seems the Magpies are signing someone very much for the future.

At just 16, you would expect exactly that. But with Joe Kinnear arriving as the club’s new director of football, Kemen’s imminent signing is likely to slip very much under the radar as fans consider the repercussions of their former manager’s return.

And yet fans will hope the 16-year-old ultimately proves to be a signing more akin to Yohan Cabaye than Gabriel Obertan.
