Manchester City struck up a fine relationship with Fiorentina when they struck a deal involving Stefan Savic for Matija Nastasic, and that might give them an edge over Chelsea and Arsenal in the hunt for Stevan Jovetic this summer.
At the start of the summer it looked like Stevan Jovetic might be the first high profile signing of a new, high-spending era at Arsenal, with the Fiorentina striker ready to move to the Emirates in a £25million deal.
However, as ever in the transfer market, nothing is as simple as it seems, and rumours that Arsenal are unwilling to spend £25million on Jovetic have led to Chelsea and Manchester City taking an interest in the 23-year-old.
Now there have been reports that City could well have the edge in a transfer battle, as Fiorentina could give them first option on the forward after striking up a good relationship when they agreed a deal involving Stefan Savic for Matija Nastasic last summer.
That deal looks like it might end up be an excellent piece of business for all involved. Fiorentina got a hefty fee and an instant replacement for Nastasic, with both players becoming key men at their new sides.
Savic, whose career looked destined for disappointment after a poor start at Manchester City, made 26 Serie A appearance last season, and at 22, he looks an excellent young defender.
The good feeling around that deal might now help City pursue Jovetic this summer, and Savic himself has not been shy about advising his team-mate and compatriot to go the Etihad despite his difficult time there.
Jovetic is one of the most sought after young forwards in Europe, and has said that he is keen to move on this summer. City are on the lookout for new strikers as they could let both Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez leave in an attempt to overhaul their squad under new manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Arsenal and Chelsea will now be nervously watching their Premier League rivals to see if they move for Jovetic. Having already splashed the cash on Jesus Navas and Fernandinho, Manchester City will not wait long if they do want Jovetic, and one of their former players might be the key in the transfer saga this summer.
