Tottenham already have a small collection of talented Belgians in their midst with Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembele vital cogs in the Andre Villas-Boas machine.
But rumours have also spread recently that they were looking to add yet another Belgian sensation to the growing ranks in the Premier League.
Radja Nainggolan may not sound particulary Belgian but the Indonesian heritage combative midfielder has featured in four games for the Red Devils and at 25-years-old is now looking for a new challenge.
Currently with Cagliari he has been an ever present for the Emilia-Romagna outfit since singing a permanent deal with the club in 2010 and his performances in Serie A caught the eye of AVB and co last season.
And that interest reportedly heightened when their attempt to sign Fredy Guarin in the week fell on deaf ears.
Valued at around €15 million he is certainly an investment but in an interesting little twist this morning Inter Milan are apparently ready to get in the way of Spurs’ transfer plans once again; with Sunderland and Paolo Di Canio playing a supporting role.
According to reports in Italy today Inter Milan are readying a plan to raise funds for the Belgian this summer; as Walter Mazzarri plans a complete revamp of the Inter Milan team he has inherited from Andrea Stramaccioni.
The plan involves selling one of their young talents to Sunderland for a fee of €8 million. Di Canio has been linked with an interest in 20-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan this summer and Inter are ready to sell the player in order to raise funds for their new endeavour.
Duncan had an excellent spell on loan with Livorno last season but Inter are not sold on his long-term prospects in Milan and are ready to jump at the chance of selling him to The Mackems should they follow up their reported interest in the Black Stars international.
Tottenham fans can of course take solace in the fact a deal to sign Paulinho, a perfectly adequate if not better alternative to Nainggolan, seems to be making progress with his agent in England over the weekend.
But Sunderland fans should be very excited; as Duncan is an exceptional talent who is perfectly suited to the Premier League way of playing.
Tottenham’s loss on this occasion appears to be Sunderland’s gain.
