Bet this Southampton defender wishes he went on trial with Liverpool now

Vegard Forren chose Southampton over a trial at Liverpool but now with Dejan Lovren arriving at St Marys we wonder if he wishes he chose differently.

Southampton FC have just made possibly one of the best signings of the summer by snapping up Croatian international centre-back Dejan Lovren from French outfit Lyon on Friday.

The powerful but technically gifted defender was wanted by many teams across Europe this summer however Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino has convinced him to give it a go on the Solent next season.

However The Saints already have a plethora of centre-back options in their squad so what does it mean for them.

Maya Yoshida was signed last year and after a shaky start came into his own toward the end of the campaign while Jos Hooiveld also had a mixed campaign.

Jose Fonte has been linked with Reading to join back up with Nigel Adkins but the main player this spells trouble for is Norwegian international Vegard Forren.

Forren was signed by Nigel Adkins in January but unfortunately for the 24-year-old centre-half he was signed on the exact day that Nicola Cortese decided to let Adkins leave; against his own will.

Pochettino arrived on the same day and since then Forren has not played a single game for the club.

The former Espanyol manager gave many reasons over the next few months as to why Forren was not being given game time on the South Coast.

He wasn’t up to match fitness, struggling with injury, getting in to Premier League shape.

But reading between the lines it seemed clear that the Argentine was not keen on playing the Norwegian at the heart of his back-line.

But Forren did have other options.

He was of course invited for a trial at Liverpool in the same week he signed for Southampton.

Forren was on his way to Liverpool for a one week experience at the Merseyside club however when he heard The Saints were willing to sign him without a trial he jumped at the chance; obviously without the knowledge that the man who signed him was to be sacked the very same day.

We guess that Forren wishes he went to that trial in Liverpool back in January. While he may not have got the nod for Liverpool he would certainly not be looking at being replaced before he even pulled on a Southampton shirt.

Do you think Forren has a future at Southampton?
