One of Brazil’s most coveted players at this present moment has to be Corinthians midfielder Paulinho. The 24-year-old has been linked with numerous clubs across the European continent; where he would be returning for the first time since leaving LKS Lodz of Poland in 2008.
Last summer saw him have a move to Inter Milan confirmed before he pulled out of the deal at the last minute in order to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup.
He increased his standing even further with some excellent performances in Japan as Corinthians conquered Chelsea to be crowned world champions of club football.
He then demonstrated the goalscoring ability he possesses from midfield in the recent international friendly against England - volleying home the equaliser for Selecao.
Corinthians are reportedly ready to let the player go this summer with a reported price tag of £14.5 million for the Brazilian international.
Up until recently AS Roma have been the surprise favourites to complete his signature in the summer but that deal has apparently faltered - leaving Spurs as the new favourites to snap him up.
It was long felt that should he go anywhere in England it would be Chelsea however the arrival of Franco Baldini as the director of football at White Hart Lane has made Tottenham the favourites to snap him up.
Baldini was believed to be instrumental in Roma’s pursuit of the Brazilian and with his move to Spurs follows his previous interests.
And it would be a fantastic signing for Spurs; with Sandro back to fighting fit this summer it would potentially give Spurs a centre midfield comprising of the pair that will feature in those positions for Brazil at the World Cup in 2014.
While all transfer rumours often have their fair share of scepticism this deal has just perhaps been given a little bit of extra credence - as Paulinho has confirmed his agent is actually in England right now.
“It’s true my agent is in England at the moment, but I don’t know anything else. I am certain he will tell me what’s going on soon.”
While there are still several boundaries yet to overcome such as his complicated player rights it seems this could very well be a deal on the verge of completion.
And what a deal it would turn out to be for Tottenham Hotspur.
Are you hoping Paulinho signs for Tottenham this summer?
