The last few hours haven’t been the best for Manchester United fans believing they would soon be signing the “next Makelele” and one of the most prolific strikers in world football.
Despite reports at the weekend that Monaco midfielder Nampalys Mendy could be arriving this summer on a free transfer, French newspaper L’Equipe has reported that the 20-year-old has already decided to move to Nice once his contract expires.
While referring to United as the club of his dreams, he added, “I want to stay in France. I’ve already made my choice.”
And if any United fans remained hopeful that Robert Lewandowski would soon be forming a formidable strike partnership with Robin van Persie, that too seems a little less likely this morning.
Reports originating in Italy suggest that his club Borussia Dortmund had agreed a €30million fee with Real Madrid, only for the player to reject the move.
It seems he is holding out for one club and one club only. No surprises for guessing which one.
And completing the hat-trick of missed opportunities is the news that new Everton manager Roberto Martinez is prepared to make left-back Leighton Baines the club’s highest earner.
The England international has long been linked with United as a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra. But despite the arrival of David Moyes at Old Trafford, it seems unlikely he will be bringing one of his star-men with him.
Martinez called Baines “phenomenal”, and said it was important to reward his work and begin the next chapter of the player’s Everton career.
After all these likely snubs, there is some (potentially) good news for United. In the latest round of Cristiano Ronaldo rumours, the Portuguese took to Twitter to reject claims he had agreed a new deal with Real Madrid.
Keeping the headlines coming for a least a few more days, the forward said, “All the news about my renewal with Real Madrid is false.”
