Why Manchester United are the only side Ronaldo will join from Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed reports he’s in the middle of contract renewal talks with Real Madrid.

That means the possibility that he’ll re-join Manchester United is still very much alive and there are plenty of reasons why Ronaldo will be heading back to Old Trafford, regardless of the offers and the profile of the other clubs in for him.

United are the side that gave him his way into the very top level of professional football and he still has a lot of love and admiration for the club which gave him that chance to make his name.

His goals against United in the Champions League last season acted as a little window into that affection as he showed a complete reluctance to celebrate the goals out of respect for his former club.

It’s that affection that, despite all the offers that would be on the table, would give United the first option of re-signing him.

That affection also means Ronaldo won’t be joining another English side, as he’s already said it would be very difficult for him to play for any other team in England other than United.

Ronaldo is now so big in the game all over the world, he’ll want to go to a side where his profile and role at that club are equally massive.

It’s the egotistical side of his game, which United can easily play to. He can go back to Old Trafford and he’ll enjoy the same sort of status and exposure he’s enjoyed throughout his career.

Anyone who uses the money angle as a reason for him not to go back to United is fundamentally flawed because Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez has already made big promises in that area.

Perez has suggested he would make Ronaldo the best paid player in the game to try and keep him at Real Madrid, which means there’s no financial motive behind any move to Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain or any other money bags club.

While there is always that connection with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, that’s another factor which means United have an edge over any other team.

Ferguson may not be the manager of the club any more but he’s still connected and around the club in a very big way.

Ronaldo has often talked about his relationship with Ferguson, calling him a father figure in football and that’s something that United can work to their advantage.

David Moyes is lucky to have that connection because if Ferguson walked away from United completely, Moyes would more than likely struggle to negotiate a deal which would take Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

It’s also all about success and United have as good a chance as any other team of winning silverware in the near future.

Ronaldo is a high profile, egotistical and high quality player who will want to go to a club from Real Madrid where he can add medals to his collection.

That’s something he could still do at Old Trafford which is another reason he’ll weigh up when he thinks about moving to United first over any other side interested in him.
