Arsenal €18 million Uruguayan target now finds Sunderland more likely

Abel Hernandez

Abel Hernandez was linked with Arsenal last Autumn but now could be heading for Sunderland. What's the story?

Last year it was claimed that Arsenal had a £15 million bid for Abel Hernandez turned down by Palermo, by none other than the player's agent.

The 'bid' was reported to have been submitted a year earlier for the striker, in the summer of 2011.

His agent Vicenzo D'Ippolito said: "Last summer Arsenal bid for the boy. It was for 18m Euros but the club rejected. Wenger wanted him after the departure of Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, but could not close the deal."

Even as recently as last October, Hernandez was cited by the Mail as a potential signing for the club in January. That was soon taken off the agenda, but we shall get to that...

So what presently brings us of the player?

The latest is that he has been linked with Sunderland, who could take a punt on the 22-year-old after admirers of the calibre of Arsenal have seemed to cease their interest in him for now.

Hernandez endured a nightmare season, ruined by injury and poor form, and nightmare results for his club.

He began it poorly, failing to score in any of his opening Serie A games, and then disaster struck while on international duty with Uruguay in October.

The striker ruptured his cruciate knee ligament, leaving his entire season at risk, and ruling out any January transfer to the Gunners.

He did return to action in April, featuring in Palermo's final seven games - scoring his first game of the season in May in a 3-2 loss to Udinese.

His return was not enough to prevent Palermo suffering relegation, and while Hernandez has pledged his commitment to the cause for next season, it appears he could just be moved on this summer.

Palermo's outspoken president Mauro Zamperini will only accept a good deal of course, and Sunderland will have to judge him on his potential and previous seasons, six goals in 20 in 2011/12 and eight goals in 29 the year previous.

Just don't expect his price tag to be anywhere near the £15 million Arsenal once bid, Sunderland may find a compromise at one-third of that figure.
