10 Facts about £20 million Chelsea signing Andre Schurrle

Chelsea completed their protracted signing of Andre Schurrle this week, at a cost of £20 million.

Andre Schurrle became the first signing of the Jose Mourinho era last week, and will hope to enjoy the same longeivity the first capture of his first tenure at the club Paulo Ferreira enjoyed.

Chelsea first attempted to buy Schurrle last summer, and after almost a whole year of negotiations, they have got their man, and avoided loaning Kevin de Bruyne into the bargain too.

So now the new man has finally arrived, what do we know about him?

Here are 10 facts about Andre Schurrle...

1) Schurrle is 22-years-old and had been at Bayer Leverkusen since 2011, after beginning his career with Mainz, who also play in the Bundesliga.

2) His attacking versatility is one of his key assets. In 2012/13 he played the majority of his games as a wide-forward on the left of a 4-3-3, but can also play as a striker, behind the frontman, or on the right.

3) Schurrle had a great record at international youth level, with four goals in 11 at under-19s, one in one under-20 game, and three goals in four games at under-21s.

4) He is already an experienced senior German international, scoring seven goals in 24 games.

5) Schurrle scored 11 goals in 34 games for Leverkusen last season, providing seven assists.

6) He has been sent off once in his career - a straight red for fouling FC Koln's Sascha Riether - Now of Chelsea's local rivals Fulham.

7) Schurrle had more shots in the Bundesliga than any other player last season, with 122. This also worked out at the average highest shots per game (3.6) - more than Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard's 2.8 per game.

8) In the Bundesliga last season Schurrle also completed the third highest number of successful dribbles (109), the sixth highest average per-game ratio (3.2) - higher than any Premier League player.

9) Schurrle has said one of the main reasons he joined Leverkusen in the first place, was the lure of playing alongside former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack.

10) One of his closest pals in football is said to be Spurs ace Lewis Holtby, who shared an apartment with Schurrle when on loan at Mainz in 2010/11.
