It’s important for Liverpool to be able to get the best possible value out of any deal which will see Daniel Agger leave the football club this summer.
Jamie Carragher’s retirement and the likely departure of Martin Skrtel has elevated Agger’s significance in the current squad meaning they need to raid Barcelona as much as they can if they let their defender leave for Spain.
Here are the three deals the club could consider.
The first and least likely deal is a straight up cash transfer.
Agger has a market value of around the £17 million mark considering his age and experience which makes him a very expensive central defender for any team looking to poach him from Anfield.
Liverpool hold all the power in this sort of deal and they can request a fee of £20 million which is justifiable because they’re the club losing the player and considering the interest from Monaco.
Fingers crossed in that case, the fee is far too high for Barcelona’s liking. That fee for Agger seems a little over the top but Liverpool have every right to charge that sort of price.
A Player and Cash
A more viable option for Liverpool would be swapping Agger for a player coming the other way plus a decent chunk of cash to seal the deal.
It would be a more difficult deal for the two clubs to work out because Liverpool would want that player to be a defender and Barcelona aren’t exactly over flowing with defensive talent at the moment.
They could push for a player like Marc Bartra to be included in the deal or another young defender such as Martin Montoya.
Again, that makes the likelihood of such a deal more difficult for Barcelona to accept because losing either of those players would mean losing a great deal of talent and potential.
A Straight Player Swap
Liverpool could use Agger as bait to try and get a player they wouldn’t otherwise have a chance of signing.
They’d be unlikely to afford a cash deal for players like Alexis Sanchez or they could use Agger to try and sign a combination of younger players from Barcelona; Barta, Montoya, Cristian Tello and Gerard Deulofeu are all on the list.
Agger is arguably a more valuable commodity than any of those young players because of his experience at the highest level. A combination of Barta and Tello would represent superb business on the part of Brendan Rodgers.
Which deal would you go for? Do you think Liverpool should just keep Agger?
