Liverpool’s Luis Suarez spoke earlier this week about Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo – at the mere mention of the Los Blancos’ maestro the back pages were awash with claims he’s desperate for a move to the Bernabeu this summer.
However, the truth of the matter is, the Uruguayan implied no such thing. He was asked a direct question about Ronaldo and he answered it accordingly – he admired Ronaldo as a fellow professional but the headlines on Tuesday morning give the impression he is ‘hinting’ he wishes to transfer to the Spanish capital to join him.
Liverpool fans will know this scenario of old – it’s not the first incident in recent months involving Suarez and his future where his comments have either been taken out of context or, in some publications, completely twisted – fabricated to fit the narrative that Suarez wants away from Anfield.
“Of course I would like to play with Ronaldo, he is a great player,” said Suarez, ahead of Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela.
“You never know, but it is complicated. At the moment he is in Madrid and I am in Liverpool and I do not know what is going to happen,” he added.
Here’s what the headline read:
“Luis Suarez hints at Real Madrid transfer by admitting his desire to play with Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Is that really an 'admission' that is unexpected? Of course any player would like to play alongside one of the best players in the world – I’m sure Ronaldo wouldn’t mind playing alongside Luis Suarez.
I’m sure if you asked, for example, Gareth Bale if he would ‘like’ to play with Cristiano Ronaldo he would agree but if you asked him if he’d like to play with Lionel Messi, would he not agree to that also?
Neither Suarez nor Bale are being targeted by Barcelona though are they? Therefore, neither player is asked about Messi – that wouldn’t make much of a headline would it?
