Should Chelsea switch their attention from Mangala to Garay?

Ezequiel Garay

Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in a new centre-back at Chelsea this summer, would Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay be a better choice than Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala?

Having dispensed with the ceremonial aspects of his return to Chelsea, Jose Mourinho is likely now ready to start reshaping his squad at Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks.

Although Chelsea have indicated that Mourinho will not be given limitless funds to try and turn the Blues into title contenders again, the Portuguese manager will almost certainly make two or three significant additions to playing roster this summer.

One area the Blues are apparently keen to address is at centre-back, with John Terry unlikely to be as influential as figure as he was during Mourinho’s first spell at the club.

Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala is reportedly being monitored, and over the past couple of days Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay has also been linked with Chelsea.

Both are fine players, but if Chelsea were looking for an relatively uncomplicated transfer that would strengthen their side, there are several reasons why Garay might be the better choice of the pair.

In terms of how easy it would be to complete a deal with the pair’s clubs, Garay is a far more attractive option. Porto have shown again this summer how effective they are at getting huge fees for their stars, and having sold James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho for a combined £60million already, they would have a huge position of strength in any negotiations over Mangala.

Benfica are no fools themselves, but if rumours that Garay has a 20million release clause are true, they could be powerless to stop Chelsea signing the defender.

In terms of their ability on the pitch, at 26, Garay might have less future potential than the 22-year-old Mangala, but he could be more prepared to step straight into the Chelsea first team next season, something that Mourinho might require especially if rumours that David Luiz will be sold this summer are true.

Either defender would be a good addition to Chelsea’s squad, but if Chelsea are hoping for a relatively pain free move for a player that would be a real asset to their squad next year, Garay looks the better bet.
