Just like England back in 1990 had Terry Butcher and his bloodied bandaged head, who heroically played on with his injury, the Belgium of 2013 have Vincent Kompany.
Kompany sustained a broken nose, fractured eye socket and a concussion in Belgium's World Cup Qualifying win over Serbia on Friday, and carried on to see his side capture the all important three points.
With Scotland beating Croatia, it was the night where Belgium pulled ahead at the top of the group, and Kompany's bravery is gaining iconic status in his homeland.
With a Belgian doctor declaring that Kompany 'could have risked a stroke' by playing on, it outlines quite starkly the risks the Manchester City captain underwent.
In response, thousands of Belgians have tried to express their appreciation for the defender, by creating a Facebook page lauding him as a hero.
Already more than 70,000 users have signed up to say thank you, with the page entitled 'Vincent Kompany is a HERO'.
