The future of the Ajax defender has gone quiet after it was previously claimed he was close to signing for Roma, but Vertonghen has spoken out insisting he’s ready for the Premier League.
“Toby’s qualities, of course, I know very well and he fits just fine – he can handle things at the top level and make the step up,” Vertonghen told De Telegraaf.
Vertonghen is well placed to comment on Alderweireld and his ability as a defender because of the close friendship the pair enjoyed before the Tottenham man made the switch to White Hart Lane.
There is a slight chance Andre Villas-Boas may pick up on the comments and Spurs could come into the equation, making it even more difficult for Liverpool to tie Alderweireld down on a long term deal.
Spurs have just seen William Gallas released, a top quality experienced defender and the club will definitely miss his leadership skills.
That means there is a big gap in the Tottenham back four, which needs to be filled and Vertonghen’s effectiveness at the club so far means Spurs could do a lot worse than listening to his opinion.
As far as Liverpool are concerned, something has to give in the near future because Alderweireld only has one-year left on his current contract with Ajax.
He’s either going to sign a long term deal which keeps him in the Netherlands or he’s going to be available.
If he is up for grabs then Liverpool need to land the first blow before Vertonghen’s relationship with him naturally drags him more likely towards a move to Tottenham.
Alderweireld seems like a player who could do a big job at Anfield and he fits into the line of transfers which Liverpool are looking at more and more; he’s on the younger side so he’s a better investment.
Vertonghen’s comments will only sure up Liverpool’s belief that he’s a player worth going after but if Tottenham are seriously interested in him, it will be an interesting race for his signature.
Alderweireld’s comments about his development at Ajax last season mean whoever he sees as the best club for his future, that’s where he’ll go, regardless of whether Vertonghen is there or not.
Liverpool or Tottenham, where do you think he’ll end up? Do you want him at your club?
