Belgium's 2-1 home win over Serbia may have appeared like a routine victory for the UEFA World Cup Qualifying Group A leaders, but for Vincent Kompany it was anything but.
The Belgium and Manchester City captain battled through a painful injury picked up in the first half which has caused a bit of debate in his homeland as to whether he should have been allowed to continue.
Kompany suffered a broken nose, fractured eye socket and a concussion in the win, as this photo of him after the game showed:
As reported by Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblade, medical experts have been weighing in with their opinions regarding his continued participation in the match.
"I would have immediately removed him from the square, he risked a stroke," said sports doctor Chris Goosens.
Belgium's team doctor, Kris van Cromburgge, said that he consulted with Kompany and asked him if he wanted to leave the field, but the defender did not want to and the medical opinion was that to play on was borderline acceptable.
Kompany, a true professional, will still be in a lot of pain after Friday's game, but with Belgium three points clear at the top of their group with Croatia losing surprisingly to Scotland, he will feel it was well worth it.
City fans what do you think of your captain's exploits?
