Assessing the Mats Hummels to Manchester United claims

Old Trafford

An insider close to Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has claimed he would be interested in a move to Manchester United.

The future of the German defender has been raised ever since rumours started surfacing that Barcelona would be very interested in taking him to Spain. However, it now seems that Manchester United are the favourites to land him.

A source close to the defender has claimed he would be interested in a move to Old Trafford if Manchester United can put together a big enough bid and deal to for Borussia Dortmund into acceptance.

“Mats wants to sort out his future as soon as possible and United are a team that interests him,” the source told SportsDirect News.

He would be a terrific signing for United if they managed to pull the deal off and someone who would increase the overall quality of the United back four.

His consistency and authority in the Dortmund back four ever since he joined the club has been remarkable and he showed last season that he can perform under the most intense pressure in a variety of different competitions.

However, before United fans get a little over excited by this news, it’s important to look at this claim from the ‘insider’ closely.

The quote comes from SportsDirect News, a website which also ran a report claiming Wayne Rooney was considering a move to Newcastle United.

Needless to say that report was taken down and the site was forced to issue necessary apologies for running it in the first place.

Hummels himself has also indicated that he’s happy leading the defence of Dortmund, stating that he’s not had any personal contact from Barcelona, Manchester United or any other club.

He’s also on a big contract at Dortmund, which currently expires in the summer of 2017.

If anything he could be thinking about extending his current deal to beyond that date, which makes him potentially very expensive for any side that is interested in trying to take him away from Germany.

There is even a good question over whether United even need him considering the quality of the young defenders they currently have available.

Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are all players who can effectively lead central defence in the absence of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, especially with rumours persisting they are close to finalising a deal for Ezequiel Garay of Benfica.

If the source is accurate, and it’s highly debatable, then United should crack on and get Hummels signed up before anyone else can spoil the party.

He’s a top quality German international defender. The reasons for United signing him are numerous but there chances of realistically signing him are quite low.

What do you make of the source? Do you think it’s accurate?
