All the news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford this weekend…
The transfer window may not officially open until next month, but that hasn’t stopped Manchester United from being linked with a number of players this weekend. For a run-down of the rumours, you can read our latest report here.
One player who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford is Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and former Red Denis Irwin has said the Spaniard is United’s number one transfer target.
“Cesc Fabregas has moved up Manchester United’s transfer target list to the top position,” Irwin said, “and the champions are going to move heaven and earth to get him.”
One player who doesn’t appear to be returning to England is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward has been strongly linked with a move back to United this summer, but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has other ideas.
“I am going to be as clear as possible,” Perez said. “My aim, Cristiano’s aim, and the aim of all Real Madrid’s fans is that he carries on playing here for many years to come.
“And when so many people want the same thing then it usually turns out to be the case.”
So there it is: categorical proof that Ronaldo is going nowhere, with a tiny caveat of uncertainty in the president’s use of the word “usually”.
Ronaldo’s former teammate Wayne Rooney may soon be playing elsewhere, too, with PSG defender Thiago Silva calling for the England international to join him in France.
“Whenever I have played against him he has scored,” the Brazilian said. "I would really like Rooney to sign for PSG.”
We ran a story earlier today that United were in the box-seat for Nampalys Mendy from Monaco. The midfielder would be available on a free transfer having allowed his contract to run down, and having already declared his intention to leave.
Reports from newspaper L’Equipe say David Moyes’ side are favourites to sign the 20-year-old.
And finally, pictures said to be of United’s away kit for next season have been revealed.
Shot in the same style as the images of the new home strip that was revealed last week, the kit has black and dark blue vertical stripes. But with no word yet from the club, it remains to be seen if they will be turning out in it next season.
