All the news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad this weekend…
Despite already agreeing deals for Jesus Navas and Fernandinho, that hasn’t stopped Manchester City from being linked with a whole host of players this weekend.
The first is AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy, for whom the Blues have reportedly offered €25million plus Carlos Tevez.
The Argentinian has long been linked with a move away from the Etihad as he approaches the final year of his contract. And at just 20, El Shaarawy would be a canny and exciting piece of business should City succeed.
The reports come from Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, and follow stories last week that Tevez had agreed personal terms with Juventus.
After those stories, Milan’s vice-president Adriano Galliani said he would be disappointed if Tevez moved to Turin. And while he didn’t indicate that a counter-offer was forthcoming, there is little doubt Milan remain interested in Tevez after they nearly signed him last year.
However, the fact that El Shaarawy scored 18 goals and provided six assists last season means it is unlikely Milan would let him go any time soon. Especially if reports are true that incoming manager Manuel Pellegrini wishes to keep Tevez at the Etihad.
The reports suggest that Tevez will be offered a new two-year contract and that the player’s representatives are due to meet with the club soon.
It appears very much a case of as-you-were, with Edin Dzeko also said to be staying, despite constantly being linked with a move away in recent weeks.
Pellegrini apparently rates the Bosnian and wants to see if he is willing to fight for his place at the club. It is also said that the Chilean manager’s stance on his two seemingly-departing strikers has seen the club’s interest in Edinson Cavani cool considerably.
One area Pellegrini does appear intent on strengthening is defence, and following reports that he wanted Real Madrid’s Pepe, he has now been linked with a move for another Spanish import.
Valencia’s French defender Adil Rami – once believed to be high on Arsenal’s transfer wish-list – is said to have impressed Pellegrini during his time in La Liga.
The 27-year-old will not be short of suitors should he decide to move on, with PSG also keeping tabs on his progress.
With Navas and Fernandinho in place, another midfielder wouldn’t appear to be on Pellegrini’s shopping list, and yet he is said to have given the green-light for a move for Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria.
It is a move unlikely to happen, with an imminent managerial appointment at the Bernabeu unlikely to sanction the departure of such a talented player.
Pellegrini may like wingers…but this one appears to be out of his reach.
With talk of “unfinished business” City may find the Italian returns to haunt them in the future.
