Could Chelsea swap David Luiz and Nemanja Matic again?

David Luiz

Having used Matic as a makeweight in the deal that brought David Luiz to Stamford Bridge, could Chelsea swap the players again this summer?

Of all the players who have failed to make it at Stamford Bridge, at the moment there are probably few that Chelsea regret letting go more than Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian midfielder has developed into an excellent player since leaving Chelsea for Benfica in 2011, and is now one of the most coveted players in Europe, with speculation that Manchester United, Monaco and PSG could all make a move for Matic this summer.

Chelsea are apparently also interested in their former player, and could Jose Mourinho be prepared to use David Luiz in a deal for the €40million rated player?

Matic actually went to Benfica as part of the deal that saw Luiz arrive at Chelsea in January 2011. Considering the Portuguese team also pocketed £21million, they will be very happy with how things turned out.

Mourinho is reportedly happy to let Luiz leave this summer if the right bid comes in, with Barcelona one of he teams rumoured to be interested in the Brazilian centre back.

However if Chelsea could avoid selling Luiz to one of their major Champions League rivals, as well as boosting their attempts to sign Matic, then they could consider using the defender as part of a deal with Benfica.

Matic is a powerful central midfielder, who would be a natural fit in Chelsea’s 4-2-3-1 system. The Blues have looked light at times in the middle of the park, with none of their current options offering enough protection to the defence.

The return of Michael Essien from his loan at Real Madrid will help, and if the Ghanaian stays injury free and maintains the form he showed in Spain last season then Chelsea will have little worry about their central midfield. However it could be considered risky to rely on Essien, and Matic would certainly add some depth to the squad.

Selling Luiz would be a controversial decision for Mourinho to make, with the Brazilian becoming a firm fans favourite at Stamford Bridge this season, and Chelsea might feel a little foolish if they use him to sign a player they let go to sign Luiz in the first place. However if the end result is having Matic in their midfield, Chelsea might well be tempted to swap the pair again.
