According to a report in French paper L’Equipe this morning Monaco defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy has decided to leave the club this summer on a free transfer.
Monaco have been spending big in the summer transfer window and it appears that Mendy believes his future best lie away from the principality; with OGC Nice the favourites to snap him up until recently.
Because the paper also reports that Manchester United are now leading the chase for the young combative midfielder.
The 20-year-old, currently representing France in Toulon, has allowed his contract to expire so is available for nothing other than any compensation package that may have to be agreed between the two parties.
So who on earth is Mendy and what are United apparently signing?
Well he featured 32 times in the promotion campaign of last season at the Stade Louis II but to look at him you might consider him to slight for Premier League football.
Standing at just 5ft 6ins tall, do not be fooled by his slight frame. He is known for his incredible balance, strength and crunching tackling ability; as well as a reliable distribution style from the depths of midfield.
You could say he plays in the ‘Makelele role’ which would be more apt than you might think. In fact he has been dubbed the new Makelele by many.
Monaco club scout Dider Christophe in fact called the La Seyne-sur-Mer inhabitant a ‘carbon-copy’ of the former Chelsea and Real Madrid star; rich words of support from those in the know.
Mendy has already been mentioned as a future French international and has been a regular at junior international level from the age of 16.
Whether he would be signed as an immediate first-teamer or with the hope of him one day replacing Michael Carrick in that defensive midfield role remains to be seen but according to L’Equipe he looks like following fellow starlet Guillermo Valera through the entrance door at Old Trafford.
