€45 million? Five facts about Arsenal's latest South American playmaker 'target'

Arsenal have been linked with Benfica ace Nicolas Gaitan.

Argentine playmaker Nicolas Gaitan has become the latest player to be linked to Arsenal, reports Spanish website fichajes.net.

The website claim: "Nico Gaitan could play next year at Arsenal. The talented player of Benfica has become the main target by the technical staff to strengthen the Gunners ahead of next season."

The source is hard to verify as the Spanish site carries no quotes to back it's assertions, but what the captures of Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal has shown in the past year is that the Gunners like to spring a surprise in the transfer market.

Gaitan would be a more expensive alternative to Clement Grenier, and played in the Europa League Final for Benfica a month ago.

In case Arsenal's interest does turn out to be genuine, here are five facts about him for Gunners fans to get up to speed with...

1) Nicolas Gaitan is aged 25 and is a full international for Argentina, having made six appearances.

2) He was signed by Benfica from Boca Juniors for £7.2 million in 2010. He has a release clause of €45 million but the Portuguese club may accept a fee of around €25-30 million.

3) He is an attacking midfielder who can play centrally or on the left wing and has been compared to Juan Roman Riquelme in his homeland.

4) Gaitan played 45 club games for Benfica in 2012/13, scoring five goals and providing 12 assists for his teammates.

5) He is only 5 foot 7 in height, exactly the same as Manchester City's David Silva.
