Why Arsenal must buy Wayne Rooney

The Gunners have been recently linked with the Manchester United talisman and his signing represents a great opportunity to signal their intent.

The rumour mill has been set into motion ever since Sir Alex announced that Wayne Rooney had handed in a transfer request.

While he has been understandably linked with the riches of PSG, Monaco and Chelsea the most surprising and audacious of all has been Arsenal's interest.

The club that has become accustomed to losing its best players in recent years is now been linked to one of the star players of a rival club. But given their consistency in finishing in the top four and having the best financial health in England maybe it should not come as that big a surprise.

While Arsenal may not be able to offer Rooney wages of the level of PSG, Monaco etc. they can still offer him a starring role at one of the strongest clubs in the most competitive league of the world.

In fact Rooney's degradation from star striker to sitting on the bench in United's most important match after the arrival of Van Persie has been touted as the main reason for his unhappiness at the club.

At Arsenal he would be a sure starter and undoubtedly the biggest star of the team. Rooney has also made it clear that he would prefer to play as the main striker and not in the midfield like he has been doing at United.

And he would fancy his chances ahead of Olivier Giroud at Arsenal. Add to that the opportunity to play and bond with an English core of Wilshere, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gibbs ahead of the 2014 World Cup and his reluctance to relocate his young family to a different country and we have a perfect fit.

But the move would not be that simple as Arsenal would have to shatter their wage structure by quite some margin and United unwilling to sell one of their best players to direct Premier League rival at the start of a new era.

If the move does go through it could transform Arsenal's fortunes dramatically on the pitch and signal the arrival of other world class talents to the club. With Arsene Wenger's rumoured 100 million pound warchest Rooney may be closer to the move than you think.
