Manchester United transfer news: Defender signed; Fabregas or Cabaye may follow

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United, including Guillermo Varela, Cesc Fabregas, Yohan Cabaye and Wayne Rooney.

After reports earlier in the week that Uruguayan fullback Guillermo Varela was on his way to Manchester United for a medical, the club have now confirmed the 20-year-old’s signing. While a fee hasn’t been disclosed, it is believed to be no more than £2.5million.

Varela will ultimately compete with Rafael for a position in the team, with the Brazilian United’s only out-and-out right-back prior to this move. The transfer comes after a successful trial at the end of last season.

Having signed a defensive reinforcement, it now appears United are looking to strengthen their midfield. Today the club have been linked with moves for Premier League stars past and present.

David Moyes is said to maintain his interest in former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. However reports today suggest the Gunners are just as keen to welcome the Barcelona midfielder back to the Emirates and are ready to compete with United for his signing.

With Arsene Wenger’s side having first option on the 26-year-old, the Frenchman must decide whether to spend a significant proportion of his transfer budget on a returning son.

From the Spaniard’s point of view, he is said to wish to fight for his place at the Nou Camp, which could leave United searching for an alternative.

Step forward Yohan Cabaye, who appears to have put himself in the shop window following an interview on French television.

When asked if he would consider a move to Old Trafford the Magpies midfielder said, “Yes of course, I like this club for a long time.

They are always well placed amongst the big clubs, yes for sure it could be an interesting challenge but like I said for the moment, there is nothing concrete and I am still at Newcastle.”

The Frenchman has previously been linked with a move to the champions; however with talk of Fabregas, Thiago, Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Strootman, it appears his wish may no longer be that of United’s.

One player continuing to be linked with a move away is Wayne Rooney, with Chelsea now reportedly joining Arsenal in showing an interest.

Jose Mourinho’s side are said to be considering a move for the England striker if their pursuit of Edinson Cavani proves fruitless.
