VIDEO: £6.25m Tottenham flop continues to impress admirers with Portugal goal

Portugal Goal

Helder Postiga grabbed a goal against Russia in the World Cup Qualification matches last night.

Portugal did their World Cup qualification hopes the world of good last night as they got the better of their Group F qualification rivals Russia in Lisbon.

In a tense affair it was one solitary goal that did the trick for the Portuguese side; leaving Fabio Capello chewing a proverbial wasp in the away team dugout.

And the goalscorer was a player Premier League fans, those of a Tottenham persuasion in particular, should be more than wary of; a certain mister Helder Postiga.

He struck early. After Miguel Veloso of Dynamo Kiev delivered a deadly set-piece into the heart of the six-yard box it was Postiga who got their ahead of all comers to tuck away a well-controlled volley into the back of the net via the post.

It was the 30-year-olds 26th goal for his country on the night he won his 61st cap; and such a decent international record belies his flop status in English football.

But while Postiga may have never been much of a hit at White Hart Lane after his £6.25 million move harboured just two goals and one season in English football; he has recently been enjoying an Indian summer in his career.

Leading the line for Spanish side Real Zaragoza he bagged 14 goals for the club this season; which may not sound like much but actually puts him among the top ten goal-scorers in La Liga this season.

Unfortunately, despite his efforts, Zaragoza were still relegated at the end of this season but it is not all bad for the player; as he is being continually linked with filling some big shoes.

He has been linked with helping to alleviate the loss of Radamel Falcao at Atletico Madrid and the potential departure of Alvaro Negredo at Sevilla; while some even see him as a potential option for Barcelona as they seek to bring in an apparent ‘plan B’ striker on the cheap.

His goal against Russia would not have done his chances any harm and who knows; maybe a return to Tottenham could be on the cards?

Or not.
