We have all got to know Nemanja Matic rather well over the course of 2013. The Benfica man nicknamed ‘The Spider’ has been impressing everyone across Europe with his sensational midfield displays as Benfica had a successful season; only to stuff it up in the final month.
But his displays have not gone unnoticed. The likes of Paris Saint-Germain, AS Monaco and Premier League champions Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in the player; despite his hefty release clause of €50 million.
And the reason many of us found this so surprising was due to his past as a Chelsea player.
Matic played for Chelsea between 2009 and 2011 but I use the term ‘played’ very loosely as he barely made an appearance for the side.
Instead he was shipped out on loan to farm-club Vitesse Arnhem in Holland where he showed glimpses of what we all recognise now as his immense talent.
I have, on a few occasions, purred over the player and the thought of Chelsea giving him his chance two years ago instead of shipping him out to Benfica as part of the David Luiz deal.
I mean wouldn’t he fit in just perfectly in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield?
Well according to a report in Portugal today that is what Jose Mourinho thinks.
Portuguese daily paper Correio da Manha report that Mourinho is such a big fan of Matic that he is willing to risk Chelsea blushes by re-signing the player this summer. They report he could be happy to offer €40 million for his services; which despite being €10 million short of his release clause is still a massive amount for a player the club affectively let go in January 2011.
So far the reports are sketchy and on top of that the reports are not exactly what you would call in depth.
It is also clear that no bid has yet been made but according to this report in Portugal somebody seems to know something about a definite interest in the 24-year-old Serbian international resonating from the returning Chelsea boss.
So could the returning boss bring about the return of a player once deemed passable?
Do you think Chelsea could and should re-sign Matic at a massive financial loss?
