Could a swap deal take Chelsea star Juan Mata to Real Madrid?

Juan Mata

Real Madrid could be on the verge of a £25 million bid for Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata.

Unless Jose Mourinho has gone completely mad, that’s not a transfer the Blues can allow to happen.

Even if there is some truth in the story, they should utilise the chance to get a Real Madrid player coming the other way who doesn’t mind linking up with Mourinho all over again.

Mata is a key player in the current squad and someone who played a significant role in the side last season, as Chelsea secured a top three finish and victory in the Europa League.

If they sell him for mere cash then it would be a bad piece of business by the club when there are several players they could ask for in a swap deal.

Sami Khedira

The big German midfielder recently spoke of his admiration and gratitude towards Mourinho for giving him the chance to play at Real Madrid.

He could be tempted into a move to follow Mourinho to Chelsea and he would fill the clear need in the side at the moment for a consistent holding midfield player who can cover in a variety of positions.

Mesut Ozil

Ozil is another German at Real Madrid who doesn’t seem to have a problem or any issues with Mourinho.

He would be a more like for like replacement for Mata in the respect that he’s a creative player. He came up with nine goals and 16 assists in La Liga for Mourinho last season, which is better than Mata’s record in the Premier League.

Luka Modric

The former Tottenham Hotspur player has struggled to settle into life at Real Madrid.

If Mata goes to Spain, that will only push Modric further down the pecking order at the club and the chance to dominate the Chelsea midfield is something he may not want to pass on for the second time in his career.

However, he may be slightly put off by the fact it was Mourinho who was so reluctant to use him last season in the Spanish capital.

Xabi Alonso

Alonso has already thrown cold water on rumours linking him with a move back to Liverpool, but the chance to join Chelsea means a different opportunity altogether.

He could do the same job in front of the back for he’s been doing for Real Madrid and he’d retain his chance of winning the Champions League as well as competing for the Premier League title.

Which player do you think could replace Mata? Is Mourinho going mad if he’s thinking of selling him?
