Manchester United transfer news: Varela deal close but Baines move unlikely

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United, including Guillermo Varela, Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

It seems David Moyes is close to making his first signing as Manchester United manager. Following a successful trial at the club, Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela is reportedly travelling to England to complete a move to Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old right-back currently plays for Penarol in his home country and is seen as long-term competition for United’s Brazilian fullback Rafael.

While an offer of £1.2million was reportedly rejected earlier this month, a deal for closer to £2million is now being mooted.

Penarol’s club treasurer tweeted that he and the player were on their way to England yesterday.

While one fullback is set to arrive, another looks to be staying exactly where he is, with new Everton manager Roberto Martinez keen to keep England international Leighton Baines.

Having previously been talked of as a replacement for Patrice Evra, Baines is to be offered improved terms at Goodison Park.

Leighton is under contract and I have told David not to come back for him,” owner Bill Kenwright has said.

The report comes after Evra was linked with a move to his former club Monaco, who now appear to be turning their attention to defensive recruits following the signings of some prolific frontmen.

And yet for all Evra’s reported disintegration, the United vice-captain has just finished an extremely impressive season, with reports of his downfall greatly exaggerated.

Another Everton player linked with Old Trafford is Marouane Fellaini. And yet it is being reported that Arsenal have moved ahead of United in pursuit of his signature.

The Gunners are said to be prepared to match the Belgian midfielder’s release clause of £24million.

And while Fellaini has previously spoken of his excellent relationship with Moyes, it may be Arsene Wenger who gets to work with him next; especially if United complete a deal for Kevin Strootman as has been strongly reported in recent days.
