The Daily Mail speculated on it earlier in the week and now reports in Spain also believe that Luis Suarez might indeed force through a move to Madrid this summer - but not the destination you might assume.
The Uruguayan international scored his first goal since biting Branislav Ivanovic on Wednesday night; bagging the winner against France in Montevideo and that demonstration of goal-scoring ability is just what Spanish third-placed outfit Atletico Madrid are after this summer.
Los Colchoneros lost their main striker this summer. Goal machine Radamel Falcao decided to take up the riches available to him at AS Monaco; with their yachts, Grand Prix’s, casinos and lax views on tax.
So with that in mind they are looking to fill a rather substantial void at the club and plan on spending big to do so; ahead of an assault on the Champions League next season.
Now Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo reports that Atletico might do well to try beat their local rivals to the signing of Liverpool’s very own star player; well at least to keep the fans happy anyway.
In a survey given to fans of the club they made their feelings clear on the player they would most like to see playing for the club in ‘El Tigre’s’ place next season.
30% of the fans surveyed responded to say that they would like to see Suarez in the red-and-white stripes of Atletico next season.
However the website was quick to add realism to the dreaming and we would also like to intervene in a similar manner.
While they may have the money from the Falcao transfer this is still a team struggling with some outstanding debt; most of the cash from the Colombian’s sale will be used to alleviate the banks worries.
Suarez also said he would find it hard to ‘say no’ to Real Madrid; not Atletico.
While he is apparently unhappy at Anfield I think there is also every possibility he would stay on Merseyside this summer if a move that did not tickle his fancy did not come up.
Essentially Atletico are definitely home to some rather ambitious fans.
Following Suarez they voted Edinson Cavani as the next best replacement; with perhaps a Uruguayan feel coming from Diego Forlan’s previous success at Vicente Calderon.
Then they want Fernando Torres; the ‘prodigal son’ of the club to return from Chelsea.
In reality, as with most things in life, Atletico may have to make do with not second but third best.
Do you think Luis Suarez could sign for Atletico Madrid?
