This summer the future of Bacary Sagna at Arsenal looks like being the main possible departure story at The Emirates. The French international right-back has continually failed to commit himself to Arsenal FC when pressed in the media.
His current deal at the club expires in the summer of 2014 and as he enters the final year of his current deal The Gunners are keen to see him either extend that deal or cash in on the 30-year-old before losing him for nothing.
And with new rumours linking him with a switch to his homeland - with Paris Saint-Germain said to be the favourites for his signature - Arsenal would do well to start identifying replacements for their starting full-back.
While Carl Jenkinson is expected to start featuring increasingly regularly for the first-team they will also be looking to bring in another competitive player for the slot.
Many a name has been mentioned. Daryl Janmaat of Feyenoord, Nathaniel Clyne of Southampton, even Angel Rangel of Swansea as a cost effective alternative.
But for me the one that really made sense was Sochaux right-back Sebastien Corchia.
Young, talented …. French; right up Arsene Wenger’s street.
But all joking aside this is a very talented young man. Captain of the French under-21 team with 26 caps at that level and he helped his club avoid relegation from Ligue 1 in a 34 game season; this is a player full of pedigree.
But until recently it looked as though Corchia only had eyes for one destination. It has been reported that Olympique Lyonnais were the favourites to snap him up for a while now. The French giants are set to lose Anthony Reveillere on a free transfer this summer and are seeking a young replacement.
But L’Equipe reports that the deal has hit a snag. They report that Sochaux have not yet received a formal offer for Corchia’s services from the Rhone club. The suggestion is that Lyon are not willing to pay the €5 million asking price for the player; who has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.
If this report resonates true Arsenal should act fast.
That asking price for a player this talented is nothing short of a steal and regardless of Sagna’a future employing his eventual replacement in the national team for such a cut-down price would make perfect business sense from Wenger and co.
If Lyon are stalling then Arsenal should overtake them and snap Sochaux’s arm off at that price.
Do you think Arsenal should sign Corchia for €5 million?
