John Thain on Merrill Lynch and Bank of America

Super Thain

Ex-Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain has been speaking to The Wall Street Journal.

Here's what he had to say about Merrill Lynch / Bank of America:

1. Regrets? John Thain has one.

'I wouldn't have taken the Merrill job. I think that's probably the single biggest thing'.

2. 'I regret having to sell Merrill Lynch to Bank of America'.

3. 'BofA shareholders got a pretty good deal. I was the CEO of Merrill, and the shareholders got a $50 billion deal when the next week they might have gotten zero, and the employees for the most part kept their jobs and actually got paid'.

4. 'I did my job, which was to protect the shareholders and to protect the employees. That was somewhat damaging to me personally, but I don't regret what I did because it was the right thing to do'.
