The future of Aston Villa’s main man is still a little bit up in the air with conflicting reports suggesting he’ll stay at Villa Park and others saying he’s set to leave the first opportunity he gets.
Thibaut Courtois has urged him to make good on the rumours which have said he’s being targeted by Atletico Madrid as the long term replacement for star striker Falcao who has headed off to Monaco leaving them with a huge gap in attack.
“He is a very strong centre-forward, tall, but very good technically and skilful with the ball at his feet. I believe he would be a great signing for Atletico. During these days with the national team I am going to ask him about his future,” Courtois told AS.
The Belgian shot stopper is well placed to talk about Benteke’s future for two specific reasons.
Firstly, he’s played at Atletico for the last two years, which gives him a good basis to talk about the club and the appeals of playing for the Spanish team.
He went there as a very young man originally and still seems to be fighting to stay there on another loan deal from Chelsea for a third consecutive year.
He seems to only have good things to say about the club at the moment, which can only increase their chances of getting Benteke ahead of the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Secondly, there is that international link which gives Courtois the chance to talk to Benteke and provide Atletico with an edge in the race to sign him.
They will see each other on a daily basis in and around the national setup with Belgium so the pair can talk long and hard about their futures and Courtois will have ample opportunity to sell the club effectively.
“I know him well, we played together when we were younger. Benteke is a player who has worked a lot, he left Genk and had various loan spells which have helped him grow. His 11-12 season with Genk was sensational,” he added.
He also seems to care deeply about the decisions Benteke makes, which is proof of the friendship the pair of them have.
The only problem is if Courtois is forced to go back to Chelsea rather than stay in Spain on loan.
Eventually he will be drafted back by Jose Mourinho to be the long term replacement for Peter Cech but at the moment that looks some way off.
It only looks like positives piling up for Atletico at the moment and if Benteke does start listening to offers then he could jump at the chance to go to Spain.
Do you think Benteke will join Atletico Madrid?
