The Spanish media has claimed Jose Mourinho wants to sell Juan Mata.
Mata is one of the most important players to the attack of Chelsea heading into next season and his record over the last campaign was superb; 11 goals and 17 assists from all Premier League appearances.
We always knew there were going to be changes when Mourinho was appointed in charge for the second time in his career but this is news which may not sit well with a lot of Chelsea fans.
The reports seem to have surfaced based on the suggestion that Chelsea need to raise transfer funds in order for Mourinho to go after his main targets.
If that’s the case then it could be the case that Mourinho and Roman Abramovich still have issues with each other based on transfer dealings the first time the Portuguese coach was in charge of the team.
It just doesn’t make any sense when you consider how important Mata is in terms of linking the midfield and attack and also in terms of creating and scoring goals.
It was important for Frank Lampard to sign on at the club but this seemingly suggests that Chelsea under Mourinho would see him as more important in an attacking sense than Mata which is fundamentally flawed.
The story could have started simply because of the rumours which have surrounded striker Fernando Torres.
Torres is more likely to be axed by Mourinho, which would have a big impact on Mata’s future at Chelsea because the pair are such close personal friends and working professionals.
However, Torres proved in patches last season that he can still play a role for Chelsea up front and his departure would create more problems than it would solve for Mourinho.
Mata is arguably the best in the Premier League at the moment when it comes to ball retention, passing and setting up goals.
It’s only natural that there are going to be some very crazy stories and rumours flying around now that Mourinho is back.
Fingers crossed he hasn’t lost his marbles thanks to Real Madrid because if he axed Mata, he’d be on the bad side of plenty of supporters and he would already have the media ripping into him before he’s got his teeth into his second spell.
What do you make of the stories? Is it crazy for Chelsea to get rid of Mata?
