Arsenal latest: Including trio released, Mignolet and Rooney

News and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

Arsenal have confirmed the exit of three players this summer. The official website confirms the news that Andrei Arshavin, Sebastian Squillaci and Denilson will all leave the club as free agents at the end of the month when their respective contracts expire.

Arshavin’s exit was already confirmed while there was doubt over the contract lengths of the other pair. However we now know that the Frenchman and the Brazilian will no longer be Arsenal players from June 30th.

Arsenal wished them ‘all the very best’.

Arsenal also announced via their official website today that they will face Manchester City in their final pre-season game. They will take on their Premier League rivals at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki in the ‘Super Match by Carlsberg’ on August 10th in their last preparation ahead of the new Premier League season.

Wayne Rooney is again being linked with Arsenal as he made it clear today that his desire was to continue playing as a central striker for the foreseeable future. He said that while he did one day see his future as a central midfielder that for now he wants to play up front; something Arsenal could offer him.

Tottenham transfer target Miralem Pjanic has expressed how close he came to signing for North London rivals Arsenal in 2011. He stated to Bosnian press that he was very close to a move to The Emirates but that his father had already bequeathed his services to AS Roma from Lyon so therefore he didn’t make the move.

Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has downplayed links with Arsenal. The Belgian international has been continually linked with a move to The Emirates this summer but he admitted he has held no talks with the club since the season finished. He is instead looking forward to getting away on holiday with his girlfriend and hoping Paolo Di Canio can change the fortunes of the club.

Robin Van Persie has been speaking about the transfer ‘games’ that the directors at Arsenal played in the saga that eventually saw him sign for Manchester United last summer. The Dutch striker admitted there was interest from Manchester City and Juventus for his signature but that he always wanted to sign for United.

Finally and Laurent Koscielny has stated that Arsenal must match his ambition or he could leave. The French international wants to win titles and has recently been linked with all-conquering Bayern Munich. But he says he is happy at Arsenal for now.
