1. 1727 - The first boxing title fight takes place in London, where James Figg defeats Ned Sutton

2. 1850 - Levi Strauss makes his first pair of blue jeans

3. 1933 - The first drive-in movie theater opens in Camden, New Jersey

4. 1934 - The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is established to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities markets

5. 1944 - Thousands of Allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy in northern France at the start of a major offensive against the Germans

6. 1966 - Black civil rights activist James Meredith, the first black man to brave the colour bar at the University of Mississippi, is shot in the back and legs while on a civil rights march

7. 1973 - Keep Yourself Alive, Queen's first single, is released in America

8. 1975 - British voters back the UK's continued membership of the EEC by two-to-one in a nationwide referendum

9. 1983 - The Prince and Princess of Wales attends the premiere of the James Bond film Octopussy

10. 1988 - Jockey Lester Piggot goes to prison for tax evasion, and is stripped of his OBE

11. 1992 - Monica Seles wins her third French Open title with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 victory over German rival Steffi Graf
