Both Atletico Madrid and Napoli have stepped up interest in other strikers this week, with the Spanish side finalising a deal for Leo Baptistao. Is the way clear for Tottenham Hotspur to finally sign Leandro Damiao as a result?
The stars seem to be aligning, at long last Tottenham Hotspur look well set to complete a deal for Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao this summer.
The forward’s current club, Internacional, seem resigned to losing Damiao, with Julio Baptista being lined up as a replacement for the 23-year-old, and crucially, Spurs main European rivals for his signature have apparently turned elsewhere.
Atletico Madrid, keen to move quickly to replace Radamel Falcao, completed a deal for Rayo Vallecano’s Leo Baptistao this week, with the 20-year-old forward moving for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of €6million.
The Brazilian forward has been linked with several English clubs in the past, including Manchester United, but finalised the move to Atletico on the back of a fine season where he made 29 appearances for Rayo Vallecano.
Meanwhile Napoli seem to be targeting Mario Gomez and Alvaro Negredo as they look to secure a replacement for Edinson Cavani, who looks likely to leave the Serie A club this summer if his £55million release clause is met.
Gomez is reportedly close to sealing a £17million switch to Napoli, with Negredo also emerging as a target in the past couple of days. The news that the 27-year-old would consider a move to Serie A or the Premier League might also interest Spurs fans, with Negredo previously linked with a transfer to White Hart Lane.
However if his move to Napoli meant the Italian side called off their interest in Damiao, Spurs fans would not be too disheartened to miss out on Negredo, as it could well leave the way clear to the Internacional player.
The Brazilian team might hope that delaying any deal until after the Confederations Cup might drum up more interest in Damiao, but if Atletico Madrid and Napoli have already agreed deals for other strikers, Spurs should be in pole position to finally get their man.
