The path is clear for Liverpool to sign Albiol

Real Madrid have re-signed defender Daniel Carvajal which clears the way for Liverpool to pursue Raul Albiol.

Carvajal has had a superb season in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and it’s great news for Liverpool that Real Madrid have decided to take the chance of re-signing him ahead of next season.

It adds to the defensive reserves at the Spanish club and means Raul Albiol could be dispensable when the new manager is confirmed.

Liverpool have already done great work in the transfer market compensating for the retiring Jamie Carragher, most notably with an agreement for the soon to be out of contract Manchester City defender Kolo Toure.

Real Madrid are showing more of a tendency at the moment to give younger players a chance, perfectly demonstrated by the situation of Raphael Varane who had his break out season thanks to Jose Mourinho last year.

Now 21-year-old Carvajal is in the mix, Albiol may feel as though it’s the final nail in the coffin and that can only be good news for Liverpool.

The 27-year-old still has four years left to run on his contract but he may not feel the desire to show loyalty to the club, now that they seem to be planning for his eventual absence from the first team squad.

He is not first choice and is certainly behind Sergio Ramos and Varane when it comes to the centre of defence and Carvajal could be in the mix ahead of him next season, having played over 30 games for Leverkusen, being consistent.

It leaves Albiol in the position where he can either fight for his place in the first team or go to a club where he could quickly become one of the most important defenders in the squad.

Another reason Real Madrid may look to push him out is because he’s not as versatile as Carvajal.

Carvajal can play as a right sided full back or he can play on the right side of central defence, which will give the new manager at the club more options if injuries and suspensions start to accumulate.

At 27-years-old Albiol has to make a big decision over whether he wants to be a squad player for the rest of his career or a first choice centre back.

A move to Liverpool is only going to help him and if he plays well, shows maturity and good leadership for Liverpool, then it may even help his chances of playing for the Spanish national team again on a regular basis.

Liverpool need to go after this deal if it presents good value because Carvajal means a start to the end for Albiol.

Do you expect Albiol to leave and join Liverpool?
