Who should Davd Moyes sign for Manchester United?
There will be few managers under more scrutiny in this summer’s transfer market than David Moyes, whose every move at Manchester United will be analysed in terms of whether it is something his predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, would have done.
With that in mind his first move is especially important, as Moyes will be looking to make a statement of intent in his new role, as well as beginning to reshape the squad at Old Trafford.
One area of the team that Manchester United need to address is in central midfield, and out of the plethora of players that have been linked with them, the two names most likely to end up on the back of red shirts seems to be Kevin Strootman and Marouane Fellaini.
With the Dutch player rated at around £15million, and Fellaini over £20million, it is unlikely Manchester United will move for both, and currently Strootman appears to be the more likely signing, with some reports suggesting a deal has already been struck.
The 23-year-old PSV midfielder is clearly an exciting proposition, having already made 18 appearance for the Netherlands, but is he a better option than Fellaini this summer?
Strootman has all the attributes required to become a top class midfielder, able to operate in a holding role as well as possessing the vision to open the opposition up. He also chips in with the odd goal, but having played all of his football in the Netherlands is he ready to step up and become a lynchpin at Manchester United?
It would be a tremendous amount of pressure to place on him, and Moyes might feel that given the need for a good start in the wake of Ferguson’s departure, Fellaini might be the safer option.
The Everton player is proven in the Premier League, and his many strengths are clearly familiar to Moyes. Along with his eye for goal, Fellaini brings a dominant physical presence that Manchester United have lacked in their midfield, and the Belgian could prove the ideal foil for Michael Carrick.
Fellaini would probably be more expensive than Strootman, but if Manchester United are only going to splash out on one new midfield star this summer, the Belgian would probably be a better option.
