David Luiz seems to be the main target on Barcelona’s radar now that Neymar has been secured and Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has said he’s not going to turn his back on the club.
David Luiz will be crucial for Chelsea next season in several ways and it would be Mourinho’s first error during his second spell in charge if he lets the Brazilian walk away from the club.
As a defender he can be a little rash at times but the age of John Terry means the club need to start preparing for his retirement.
David Luiz is a player who could play in the heart of the Chelsea defence for a very long time and someone who could eventually become the captain of the side.
His basic defensive abilities make him worth keeping because they mean he’s suited to the English game; pace, aggression, strength and physical fitness.
His versatility has been well demonstrated this season and that’s another reason for Mourinho to try and hang onto him.
It allows him to play as a holding midfield player, often with spectacular results, which we could start to see a lot more of next season.
The inconsistency of John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien is a big concern for the club. In Essien’s case it was a reason they let him go out on loan to a Mourinho led Real Madrid.
It gives Mourinho more options if he wants the other five midfield and attacking players to have more freedom against the opposition, pressing forward and building the pressure.
He’s also a very popular individual with teammates and the supporters, which gives Mourinho a very simple and quick way to win over any doubtful supporters and also to retain support from the dressing room.
If Luiz leaves for Barcelona then a lot of Chelsea fans may not forgive Mourinho easily for making that cut throat decision so early on in his second spell at the club.
The most important reason of all why they can’t let him leave is because he’s simply a very good footballer.
His Brazilian and Portuguese upbringing has ensured that he’s comfortable on the ball, retains possession well and does the basics effectively.
Chelsea played some very attractive football the last time Mourinho was at the club and David Luiz gives them a great chance to be able to pass the ball out from the back and through the midfield quickly to give the strikers the chance to dominate.
What do you see as the biggest reason David Luiz needs to stay?
