Weekend report - Villa shows Arsenal agreement to Barcelona

David Villa

Spanish football expert Axel Torres claimed over the weekend that David Villa has shown Barcelona a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal.

The Spanish striker’s future at his current club has come under severe doubt following an inconsistent season and the high profile signing of Neymar from Brazilian club Santos.

Villa has been linked with Premier League moves to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for the main part of the last few months but this revelation now seems to tip the balance heavily in favour of the Gunners.

“I’ve been told he’s showed a pre-contract with Arsenal to the board of Barcelona. He’s showed he had an agreement with Arsenal, but it’s not the final agreement,”  Torres told Talksport.

Arsenal are in the market for another striker which would give them a core group of four top quality forwards to choose from ahead of the new season.

There is also ongoing speculation concerning the future of German Lukas Podolski, who continues to be linked with moves away from the club.

If that happens then there will be a big gap in the current Arsenal attack, which someone with the calibre of Villa could go a long way to eradicating.

What should give the other sides still interested in him hope is the fact that the agreement he’s reportedly shown his club is not official.

The Barcelona board are under pressure to move him on following the news but officially they are not obligated to do so.

The Spanish season has only just finished so the future of Villa is now something, which should start to sort itself out quickly as Barcelona and Arsenal look to complete changes ahead of the new season.

Villa seems to be set on a move away from the club where he’s struggled to forge close relationships with several key players because he doesn’t have the deep Catalan routes which several stars at the club enjoy.

He’s also looking ahead and despite his age, thinks he can play a big part for Spain at the World Cup next year.

Arsene Wenger doesn’t sign players unless they are better than the ones he already has and unless they improve his squad to a better state than it’s already in.

Villa is someone who would undoubtedly do that so if these rumours are true and there is already a pre-contract agreement in place, the club have to go all out to push the deal through as quickly as they can.

Would Villa be a good signing for Arsenal? What do you think of the claims?
