Arsenal weekend round-up: Including Bender and Higuain

News and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

Arsenal have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of both Gonzalo Higuain and Stevan Jovetic. Higuain announced he would definitely be leaving Real Madrid this summer in search of a ‘change of scenery’.

Meanwhile Stevan Jovetic has reportedly been labelled at too high a price for Serie A transfer rivals Juventus to reach.

Lukas Podolski has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund today. The German international has not won over all pundits despite what appeared to be a successful campaign for the Gunners and was previously linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in the summer. Now Dortmund are said to be keen on a move for the player as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski leave this summer.

Betting has been suspended on the next destination of QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar as it seems Arsenal have all but sealed a deal for the player. The stopper is currently on international duty with Brazil but it is now widely believed that a deal will be confirmed after the Confederations Cup reaches its conclusion.

Aaron Ramsey has been speaking ahead of the new season and says he wants to see new signings arriving at The Emirates in order to compete for silverware. The Welshman said that the club ‘must end’ the long wait for silverware next year and believes with ‘a few additions’ they will win something next year. He was speaking from Kenya where he is currently enjoying his post-season down-time.

Any potential move for Wayne Rooney appears to have fallen to the wayside as it is reported Arsenal simply cannot afford the England international. The club would not be able to give him the wages he is currently seeking on top of paying the transfer fee that United would be likely to ask for.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for German international midfielder Lars Bender. The Bayer Leverkusen player is the twin of Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender and is currently on international duty with Germany. A deal could be worth €18 million.

Finally and on the site we have had a look at what could be an easier route through to the Champions League. Nick Harris investigated who they are now likely to face after Real Sociedad pipped Valencia to the final Champions League qualification place on the last day of the season in Spain this weekend.
