With Neymar making his long-awaited move to Barcelona this summer, Tottenham Hotspur fans will be hoping another transfer saga involving a young Brazilian striker is also set to be resolved in the next few months.
Their pursuit of Leandro Damiao has stretched the patience of most Spurs followers to breaking point, and this summer will surely see the end of the matter, one way or another, as they look to complete a deal ahead of Atletico Madrid and Napoli.
However they do not seem to have been put off investing in Brazilian players by the experience, with rumours they are one of the Premier League teams tracking Atletico Miniero attacking midfielder Bernard.
The 20-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in Brazil, and is reportedly being considered by five European clubs, three of which are apparently from the Premier League.
Borussia Dortmund had seemed favourites to sign Bernard as a replacement for Mario Gotze, but their bid of around €12million could now be dwarfed by the €20million the youngsters is expected to cost, and the German side might favour a move for Christian Eriksen instead,
Any move would have to wait until the end of the Copa Libertadores, after Atletico booked themselves a place in the semi-finals after a 3-3 aggregate draw with Mexican side Tijuana last night.
The final of that tournament is on the 17th July, and Atletico’s president, Alexandre Kalil, has admitted it will be tough to keep hold of Bernard after that.
Spurs will face considerable competition from Manchester City and Chelsea, and having seen themselves outgunned by the Blues in the race for Oscar last summer, they will know that if either side enters a bidding war for Bernard, they are unlikely to be able to compete.
However if Spurs could wrap up a deal for either young Brazilian player, it would be a fine start to their summer business, and if they somehow picked up both to add to Gareth Bale, they would have one of the most promising young attacks in the Premier League.
