News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United are set to ‘rip up’ the pitch at Old Trafford and replace it with a part-synthetic playing surface similar to Wembley Stadium’s pitch in a deal that is expected to cost £800,000 this summer.
Meanwhile, new boss David Moyes is expected to continue with his ‘revolution’ in United’s backroom staff by appointing Everton’s academy manager Alan Irvine to take over United’s youth academy role.
United have also offered a contract to Moyes’ assistant at Everton Steve Round who is expected to come in to replace Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant Mike Phelan at Old Trafford.
Elsewhere, United and Netherlands legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has hailed Robin van Persie as ‘top class’.
"Robin made a massive impact in his first season," van Nistelrooy told ManUtd.com.
"Right from the beginning. He’s been a great signing and it ended with him winning the league.”
United legend Teddy Sheringham has urged Wayne Rooney to stay at Old Trafford amidst speculation he could leave this summer, following his transfer request handed in to United earlier this month.
“I’d like to think Rooney will stay and carry on playing for United,” he told Manchester Evening News.
“When you finish playing for United it’s very hard to go anywhere better. You’re playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and there aren’t many places you can go if you want your career to keep going up.”
“I know he’s been linked to Paris Saint-Germain and I suppose he might get more money there, but how much money do you need?”
“Football isn’t just about money,” he added.
Rooney’s United and England teammate Danny Welbeck has high hopes for the World Cup in Brazil next year.
“I want to make sure I stake a strong claim to be vying for a striker’s role at the World Cup and to do that I know I need to have a good Premier League season first. I need to be playing regularly for United, scoring goals and playing consistently,” Welbeck explained.
In transfer news, the Daily Mail claims Manchester City will ‘do battle’ with United to sign Cesc Fabregas of Barcelona.
Fabregas’ Barca teammate and reported United target Thiago Alcantara is also expected to be chased by AC Milan this summer.
Meanwhile, The Express reports that David Moyes is keen to sign ’reject’ Adem Ljajic, former a Red Devil, now playing in Serie A for Fiorentina.
The same source expects United to lose out on Angel Di Maria who is reportedly being targeted for a £17 million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
In other news, former United director Maurice Watkins has been welcomed as the new chairman of Barnsley.
Swansea City will give Alan Tate a testimonial against his former club United. The match is scheduled for Tuesday 13th August at the Liberty Stadium.
Finally, United’s legends are set for ‘battle’ this weekend. The Red Heart United event sees them face Real Madrid’s legends side at Old Trafford this Sunday. The expected line-ups are:
