Papadopoulos has been heavily linked as the main man to fill the void at Liverpool created by Jamie Carragher’s retirement.
The Greek international has had his breakthrough season with FC Schalke in Germany, which seems to have triggered big interest from the Anfield club in securing him on a long term contract.
However, Papadopoulos’ agent has thrown the whole issue into doubt after admitting that his player is not thinking about leaving his current side.
“I can say that we have no interest in a transfer away from Schalke before the end of his contract,” Paul Koutsoliakos told Bild.
That means if Liverpool want to add some extra top flight and international experience into their back four ahead of the new season, they may now have to find another player.
Papadopoulos currently has three years left to run on his current deal with the German club and if the quotes from his agent are accurate, then a contract extension with Schalke is more likely than a move away.
It does seem a little strange why a player who has just had possibly his best ever season would immediately jump ship rather than stay and try to prove his consistency.
Liverpool could still try and force the move through but the fact his contract runs for another three years means they will have to come up with a very big bid in order to tempt him away from Germany.
“Kyriakos is happy to be in the club. He is focused solely on being fit for the club’s start of the new season,” he added.
Unfortunately Liverpool don’t have the advantage of top level European football, which they could have used in their favour to try and get Papadopoulos to think about leaving Schalke.
The other worry for the club is the fact that other big teams, most notably Manchester United, have also been linked with him.
Those rumours mean that there is effectively no chance of Liverpool being able to work out a good value deal with Schalke because any side can come in and blow them out of the water with a huge offer.
United are in a better position financially than their arch rivals, as are many of the other foreign clubs who have been linked with Papadopoulos.
There was great excitement over this move within Liverpool supporter communities but it looks a million miles away from happening following these comments from the player’s agent.
Do you think Liverpool would be wasting their time trying to sign Papadopoulos?
