Five Football League stars Aston Villa could target

Leeds United, Brighton and Crewe Alexandra stars all feature.

Aston Villa’s main criticism from last season was the fact they had a very young and inexperienced squad, which translated into their football.

However, Paul Lambert cannot be blamed for a superb ability to pick up players from the football league, which is a trend he would be foolish to ignore this summer.

The examples of Matt Lowton and Ashley Westwood are two perfect contemporary examples as to why Lambert should start scouting the Championship, League One and League Two for possible reinforcements.

Here are five players he could look at.

Sam Byram

The Leeds United full back played over 40 games for his club last season proving his consistency and fitness.

He’s arguably the best young player at Leeds right now so it will be difficult to get Brian McDermott to let him leave without a fight but Villa can tempt him with the prospect of also playing as a winger.

Tom Lees

Lees is another gifted young player from Leeds who has already played over 80 times for the club despite being only 21-years-old.

Lees’ contract runs for another three years so he wouldn’t be a cheap option but he’d add competition and quality into the group of defenders, compensating for the loss of Richard Dunne.

Liam Bridcutt

The holding midfield player from Brighton will probably still be heartbroken that his club didn’t go up through the Championship play-offs.

However, that gives Aston Villa an opportunity to prey on that pain, using their Premier League status as a way to get him to consider leaving Brighton over extending his contract at the club.

Ryan Colclough

Colclough is an 18-year-old winger produced from the academy at Crewe Alexandra.

This would be more of a squad signing by Lambert because he has a lot of physical work to get fitter and stronger, but it’s an affordable deal for Aston Villa which could make up for any loss of Charles N’Zogbia in the long term.

Luke Murphy

Murphy is Crewe’s 23-year-old captain and a player they have been linked with over the last couple of months.

The issue seems to be his personal demands and also his personality, which could cause friction within the Aston Villa squad. However, the fact he knows how good he is shouldn’t be a reason for Lambert to be any less willing to take a look at him.
