The sensational South American linked with Liverpool as a Suarez replacement

Liverpool have been linked with a move for South American whizkid Luis Muriel.

The last time Liverpool cashed in on their star striker, they blew £35 million on Andy Carroll.

The two men responsible for that disaster, Damien Comolli and Kenny Dalglish lost their jobs within 18 months, and the Reds will surely not make similar mistakes if Luis Suarez departs.

It certainly does not look that way if reports are to be believed, with Liverpool linked to exciting Udinese attacker Luis Muriel.

The Colombian is quite simply something special, and has the ability to even be better than Suarez, without the controversial side.

Only 22, he has established himself as a regular for Udinese in Serie A this season, scoring 11 goals in 22 games.

While he has said that he intends on staying in Italy for the sake of his development, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers stands a good chance of convincing him by offering him a key role in his young Liverpool attack.

Muriel possesses extraordinary close-control and dribbling skills, with his talents even compared to the Brazilian Ronaldo.

His development has not gone without recognition, being awarded the Serie A Young Talent of the Year award for his contribution to Udinese's season, in which they finished fifth.

In doing so they eclipsed Inter Milan and Roma, and he has the chance to play Europa League next season if he does stay. But with a price of around £15 million on his head, he could just be a bargain for the Reds.

He is not yet the finished article, but for that price Liverpool would be buying a player who is on the verge of becoming one, with similar potential to Phillipe Coutinho who he would compliment nicely in attack.

He enjoyed a stunning end to the season with Udinese, netting seven times in 10 games, scoring past Inter, Roma and Sampdoria among others.

As the latest star in an exciting generation for his country, Muriel is likely to play a key role for Colombia at the World Cup next summer, alongside Falcao, Jackson Martinez and James Rodriguez. Buying now would be a shrewd move before his price tag rockets on the back of that.

Muriel missed out on playing against Liverpool in both ties of their Europa League clashes due to an injury, but if Suarez does leave, then his destiny to play at Anfield may just be fulfilled.
