Atletico Madrid president Gil Marin is currently in England - But the reason for his visit is as yet entirely unclear, potentially having an impact relating to Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The main press reports in Spain seem to suggest that he’s heading to London to sort out the future of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who has performed admirably for the Spanish side while on loan from Chelsea.
It’s still a little unclear as to whether the shot stopper is going to remain with Atletico Madrid on loan for another season or whether he’s going to return to Stamford Bridge as competition for Petr Cech.
It’s very difficult to see the latter of those options from happening as there are no signs Cech is about to be sold by Chelsea or that he’s about to retire, so finalising a loan for another season is likely to be top of the agenda.
It may even be plausible that the Atletico chief is in London to try and thrash out a permanent deal for the goalkeeper, which would seem him stay in Spain, which he seems to want.
However, Catalan newspaper Sport claims he’s in the UK to sound out Javier Hernandez of Manchester United and Luis Suarez of Liverpool over possible deals to replace Falcao who has headed off to Monaco.
Sport claims that Marin is a big admirer of both players and doesn’t want to risk missing out on either, which is why he seems to be handling initial negotiations for them personally.
However, take the Sport newspaper reports with a pinch of salt because it’s not unknown for a Catalan paper to create rumours and problems for a Madrid based club.
It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he’s in England to sort out all three factors for the club that he owns and runs because it’s a crucial time in Atletico Madrid’s history.
After a couple of years of fending off relegation, they are having one of their best campaigns in living memory so Marin can’t be faulted for already planning ahead to next season.
The Courtois issue seems to the easiest one to sort out because he’s made it clear that he wants to stay with the club and while Chelsea obviously value his potential and talent, there is no immediate place for him in the side.
The cases of Hernandez and Suarez seems a lot more difficult for him to get his teeth into and sort out.
Hernandez could be one of Manchester United’s most important players next season, especially if Wayne Rooney leaves, which will make it unlikely that David Moyes would consider selling him.
Luis Suarez will probably not go to Atletico Madrid because he is bound to have other big offers on the table, which he will choose over the Spanish side - but they do have Champions League football on offer.
Although given that he’s already admitted he’d be interested in joining Atletico’s city rivals Real Madrid, if it’s a toss up between the two then we all know where Suarez is going to go.
Why do you think he’s in England?
