England player ratings from 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland

England played out a 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland in a largely uninspiring performance at Wembley. So who caught our eye for the right and wrong reasons?

Here are our player ratings for England against Republic of Ireland at Wembley last night...

Joe Hart: 6

Generally a quiet 45 minutes for the City stopper; and had absolutely no chance with the Ireland goal.

Phil Jagielka: 6

If this is the future of England’s centre-back positions then be slightly concerned. Combined with Cahill the pair struggled with Shane Long all game and could not get to grips with trying to play the ball out from the back.

Gary Cahill: 6

The Chelsea man certainly does all the ‘old-school’ things right and was decent in the air from corners and set pieces.; he also made an excellent sliding tackle on Aiden McGeady.

But he let Shane Long run across him for the opening goal and along with Jagielka was far too slow getting the ball out from defence.

Glen Johnson: 5

Full of his usual attacking verve but sometimes he needs to just play the early ball.

Defensively worrying. McGeady skinned him once and he was completely outdone by Long for the Ireland opener.

Ashley Cole: 6

Pretty much what you would have expected from the on-night captain in a trademark solid performance.

Michael Carrick: 7 Man of the Match

The United midfielder really was at the centre of everything good for England but he also struggled to deal with plenty of David Forde’s long clearances.

But with Hodgson’s impotent 4-4-2 he didn’t have much in the form of options ahead of him.

Frank Lampard: 6

Lamps bagged the equaliser in typical fashion but he also had a tendency to give the ball away in this game.

Theo Walcott: 7

Was generally England’s greatest threat throughout with his pace proving to much for Stephen Kelly.

Wonder how much better his performance would have been were England not playing a draconian 4-4-2 and had three up top.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 6

The Arsenal man worked pretty hard but overall was not entirely effective.

Wayne Rooney: 6

Rooney was just sort of ‘around’ for this performance. He certainly didn’t have a bad game but it just didn’t click into place and that could be down to a lack of match sharpness.

Daniel Sturridge: 7

In the 30 minutes he was on the pitch the Liverpool man was very impressive. Dropping deep to link up the play, running the channels and claiming an assist.

It is a shame he is injured for the Brazil game as he looked ready to cement a starting place his own.

Jermain Defoe: 5

Not 100% fit and it showed in a rather tame appearance.

Ben Foster: 6

Had little to impress us with and despite a little wobble did OK on his second England debut.

Leighton Baines: 6

Solid turn-out as we have come to expect from the Everton man.

James Milner: N/A

Not on the pitch long enough for a genuine assessment.

What were your thoughts on England’s performance?
