1. 1431 - Joan of Arc is burned at the stake

2. 1536 - King Henry VIII of England marries wife number three, Jane Seymour, 11 days after he had his second wife executed

3. 1937 - For the first time in the Spanish Civil War a foreign power is openly involved in the bombing of the Spanish port of Almeria. Four German war ships bomb the city causing the loss of 400 lives

4. 1959 - The first full-size experimental hovercraft is launched at Cowes on the Isle of Wight

5. 1966 - Dolly Parton and Carl Dean are married

6. 1967 - The King of Jordan and President Abdel Nasser of Egypt sign a joint defence agreement in case of a conflict with Israel

7. 1972 - The Official IRA announces a ceasefire, but the Provisional IRA says it will continue fighting until the British leave Northern Ireland

8. 1981 - The president of Bangladesh, Zia Rahman, is assassinated in Chittagong in a coup attempt

9. 1993 - Movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger announces he is to quit as chairman of Democrat President Bill Clinton's Physical Fitness Council

10. 1995 - Thieves climb scaffolding and remove the four bronze hands from the church clock at Great Wishford, Wiltshire

11. 1996 - Prince Andrew and the former Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York ( Fergie ) are granted an uncontested decree ending their 10-year marriage
